Meet the Mindstreamer – Kristen Jurmu
Kristen Jurmu’s skillset has been growing by leaps and bounds the last few years, both personally and professionally. As an Associate Media Strategist based in our Dallas headquarters, she’s been learning the ropes under the mentorship of two seasoned teammates. Aside from researching, planning and executing media strategies that align with client briefs and coordinating with creative staff, she’s also been busy gutting and remodeling her 1950s home. With help from her handy father and lots of trips to her local hardware store, Kristen has learned, “everything from plumbing and tile work to hardwood restoration, landscaping and kitchen remodeling.” She proudly states, “It has been a great project and has become one of my most prized accomplishments.”
At the office, she’s been integrated into presenting and communicating directly with clients as her skills have grown. That’s actually one of the things she likes best about working at Mindstream, “I love the collaborative environment and having a team that listens to my opinions and points-of-view. We work together and support one another for our team’s overall success. My team has allowed my responsibilities and individual autonomy to grow and thrive over continued achievement.”
Kristen first got interested in the industry in high school when she took a course that allowed students to try out various careers for 4-6 weeks. She took an internship with Shaefer Advertising in Fort Worth and felt an immediate connection. Kristen says, “The advertising world allowed me to use and challenge both my logical and creative forms of thinking. I knew then that it was possible to find the perfect balance. I began my first three years of college as a finance student, but later switched over to communication and graduated with a degree in advertising and a minor in business.”
Kristen’s no stranger to the business world. She gained experience from an early age when her parents moved from Chicago to Texas to branch off the family business and eventually buy-out the Texas beverage manufacturing and distribution branch. Her parents’ dedication inspired her, “I watched firsthand how hard a family business is to run. There were no weekends off, there were many missed soccer games and work was a part of our daily lives. At a young age I was taught everything from cleaning, replacing and rebuilding parts, to balancing inventory and bank deposits. I went on sales calls and service calls. I gained so many essential life skills that have helped mold me into the person I am now.”
Her advice for someone wanting to pursue a career in this industry? One word: internships. “I had so many professors in college tell us that we needed to pursue at least one if not two ad agency internships prior to building a career. I paid my way through college as a bartender/bar manager and thought that experience would be enough, but soon found out that I was behind the eight ball.”
That lack of experience became her biggest hurdle breaking into this profession. She shares, “It was challenging to jump from college into the advertising world. I have had a job since I was 16 and before that I worked for my family’s business, but nothing really screamed advertising experience. Everyone wants that 2-3-years of experience and it can be challenging to find the company who is willing to take a chance and grow with you.” Kristen has proven she has what it takes to succeed and we’re proud to have her on the Mindstream team!
When she’s not busy helping to develop killer media strategies for her clients, Kristen enjoys hiking, cycling races, gardening, baseball games, outdoor concerts and festivals, anything on a beach or by the lake, exploring new restaurants and bars and HIIT workouts.
She got engaged during the pandemic and is looking forward to gaining two beautiful stepdaughters (Josie, 6 and Rylan, 9) in addition to already being a dog mom to Moose (Boxer) and Finley (Chocolate Lab). Kristen and her husband-to-be enjoy activities with the girls and their pups as well as weekend excursions on their motorcycles.
An enormous part of what makes Mindstream Media Group successful is the collective talent and collaboration of its employees across the country. While we as an agency love to share stories about client successes, industry news and product updates on our MMG Blog, we also want to feature the actual people behind the work we are doing to grow client business.
Our recent video series, Fast-Forward the Conversation, discusses the HOW behind supporting client growth through media strategy, with topics like shopper marketing, franchise work, QSR challenges, agency partnerships and more.
We’re also now featuring a Mindstreamer (as we like to call ourselves) periodically to share their stories and celebrate the diverse people, backgrounds, interests and qualities that make us unique.
